Now extend the lesson to the animals. The clip below shows the response of marine organisms to seasonal changes in the intensity of sunlight and water. What animals do you think are most sensitive to changes in the light and temperature in the water? What roles do these animals play in the food web?
Students: Think about the different areas of the earth that experience seasons. When you think of your own home, where do you notice the seasons? How would you explain the seasons to someone you met at a restaurant? Why do we have seasons?
Now that your students understand the seasons, use the clip below to explain to your students how the tilt of the earth's axis causes the seasons. You can use the text below to review important events of the seasons.
The above clip demonstrates the importance of the Sun to all life on earth. Using this clip, use the text below to review the nutrient cycle. This clip serves as a wonderful review on oceanic phytoplankton, its importance to the fish in the ocean, and the essential role of the sun in lighting the food web. Later in the year, talk to your students about how the solar system is reflected in the seasons. You can begin a whole unit on the solar system at that time. Get them excited about space!
Because they can't see the sun, students will be able to take home the message that the sun is the energy source that provides the food we need during each season. Students will discover that the sun provides energy for those organisms which utilize that energy to produce themselves and for their environment. At the end of the year, have your students create a class social media network sharing information about the importance of the sun. This is a perfect opportunity to reflect on the lessons of the unit and provide a positive take on energy use.
When your students are finished exploring this topic, consider extending the unit with a discussion of how climate change is changing the sun's influence on seasons and ecosystems. Students will have an opportunity to explore how this change may impact the food webs they have studied. You can also invite students to explore and discuss the issue of extreme weather events.
Discussing the Earth's seasons is a great way to bring students’ attention to the Earth’s environment. Your students will learn how seasons are shaped by the Earth’s tilt and by the sun’s influence, and will be able to make connections between these topics.
This is a fun project for older grade-school and middle-school students. The game features a variety of images of Earth taken from NASA's Hubble and Chandra space telescopes. It helps students learn about the changes Earth has undergone through time and the processes that have caused those changes. And it will give them a sense of awe and hope in our future.
One of the drawbacks to this approach was that we needed to recompile every time we made even a small change to the code. This slowed everything else we were doing down and because we couldn't always have someone waiting for the application to finish building. 827ec27edc
