Gold is also an excellent material with which to evoke symbols and images of the dead. In this ritual context, particularly in ancient Scandinavia, gold and the object made from it were frequently used as an alternative to stone for burial monuments. Gold was also used in other contexts where gold was assumed to enhance the potency of the objects or persons carrying it, such as magical talismans, weapons or jewellery. In this thesis an example of this association between gold and spiritual power is suggested in the late medieval armiger and necromancer John of Dee, who describes his magical jewels (Demeter 1984).
Gilded statues of the Virgin Mary have been found at Sana'in, Gharb and Hebron. The gilded and painted image of the Virgin Mary recovered from Sana'in has been dated to the late seventh century, while the other ones have been dated to the fifth to seventh centuries (Elbern 1988). The reason for the investment in these statues, and their rapid disappearance in the late tenth and eleventh centuries, can partly be explained by the turmoil between Muslims and Christians after the siege of Jerusalem in 638, in which Christian pilgrims and monasteries were repeatedly terrorized and pillaged. Nevertheless, the gilded and painted image is able to hold up nicely to even the longest and heaviest of mechanical transport. The religious meaning of this gilding is already clear. The association of the sacred through precious and glowing materials is found also in fourteenth-century iconography, where gold is included in the figures of the Virgin Mary, saints, angels, bishops and other important people in the Christian household, and especially in the fresco paintings and icons of the so-called Sicilian Churches. d2c66b5586
