Consequently, gender roles, standards of beauty, and gender stereotypes are all products of culture. Gender roles can be thought of as the social expectations of what a man or a woman should be. A woman may be expected to be nurturing and caring, whereas a man may be expected to be strong and powerful. In our society, there are certain gender roles that are expected and assigned to certain people, regardless of their gender. This perception of the roles for each gender can vary greatly depending on where one lives and the social class of the person. This idea of gender roles is supported by the works of gender theorists such as Judith Butler. Butler recognizes the idea that there are expectations of society and that these expectations are often incorporated into our culture. In her work, she argues that gender roles exist within the mental space and imagination of the individual. Butler further argues that the fact that these roles are created and assigned to a particular gender defines the individual's own sense of self, which is also socially constructed. In this aspect, they are gender roles and gender stereotypes. When gender roles are challenged, stereotypes are challenged as well. In this way, the roles and stereotypes are just as much a result of society as they are of the individual.
