Goal 2: Establish a process by which work can be requested, allocated, and tracked. If there is no clear order of work, the team will struggle to set realistic expectations for themselves and their client. When the team is being productive, each request should be completed by the end of the day the request was allocated.
Goal 2: Take time to get to know your team and your project. Talk to everyone involved, and show your appreciation of their efforts. The more you work together, the more you'll understand how things are supposed to work. And, you can't really be a team player until you know the team.
Goal 1: If you are able, try to understand your client's purpose. If you can't, consider consulting a business consultant. Alternatively, if you see a chance to help, go for it. But, if you don't understand your client's purpose, you won't be able to anticipate the future. You're working blind.

In software engineering, WIP is a similar concept, but the distinction lies in the type of work being done. Software in production (or in-progress) may have its own costs and risks associated with it. There are many reasons that a product could be in WIP. Many WIP items are simply not ready to be released, however, there are also situations where a feature is being developed for a specific customer or for a short-term project. In any case, WIP items are frequently a waste of time because they are not actively being developed. Many WIP items are left in a state of limbo because they are not being worked on and their status will not be changed until someone on the team gets around to it.
A WIP limit is often used on product teams. If a team has only 1 or 2 core developers, a WIP limit of 5 or 10 is not uncommon. This helps ensure that none of the work is neglected and that the team is making steady progress. If you do not have a WIP limit, you may find that the team comes together and has a hard-fought battle of attrition to reduce the total items to a realistic number. This is often a sign that the team is overworked and needs a break.
