The painting process can be a little numbing. When West first stripped down for Golub, she was uncomfortable, recalling one time that she'd left a key inside a gauzy bra. "You forget all about that," she says. "It's like a switch goes off in your brain. You're really, really not going to be afraid."

West had never been so completely nude. Until that first painting, she'd only modeled completely topless."For the first time, it had a purpose," she says. "I really didn't do anything in that moment except see myself. I got to see what it looked like behind those lines, and then I could put the idea of what it was in perfect focus." That's the point. West is fine with the lines. But they don't freak her out, either. Golub painted her face in the monitor so she wouldn't look like the Mona Lisa.

Still, the look on West's face reminds me of the image of Edvard Munch's "The Scream" painting, the one tucked behind the cover of the famed book The Scream. There's nothing scary in West's face. It's a little melancholic, but that feels authentic, not exaggerated. And it's something we don't usually see in portraits of people who look like they're posing for a poster for a manga-style anime.
