While Brown's music often had racial themes, his groundbreaking, blues-influenced style was non-racial, mixing the styles of the American civil rights movement (such as the work of activist and comedian Dick Gregory and musician Curtis Mayfield) with gospel, soul, jazz, gospel-influenced pop (especially the style of the Temptations), and R&B. Brown's racially-charged performances, such as his 1968 hit single I Got The Feelin' and his 1969 single Say It Loud (I'm Black and I'm Proud) (featuring his only number one hit in the United States), were rarely as overtly political as other contemporaneous R&B artists, such as The Rolling Stones and Otis Redding. He was the first black artist to have a #1 hit single in the UK, while his 1970 Doing It To Death, a cover of the song by Cream, reached #3 in the UK. He also had a #1 hit in Germany in 1971, with the song Bigger and Better, and later had UK singles such as Here I Come Again, The Payback and You Got the Power reach the top of the UK charts. He is also credited with the first live rap album, Live at the Apollo.
On November 18, 1968, Brown was arrested for possession of marijuana after police found two bags of the substance in a car he was driving while on his way to a concert in Oakland, California. There was a warrant for Brown's arrest, but the police officer who had written the warrant had mistakenly given it the wrong name. Brown was released without bail. The case was later dropped without charge.
On June 11, 1969, Brown performed his first concert in front of a paying audience in Los Angeles, California, at the Forum. The show was expected to be a financial disaster, as most of the 4,000 seats had been leased for $30 a ticket (half the usual price) in an effort to keep ticket prices down for the financially strapped event; however, Brown's concert was a huge success.[86]
Brown's performance was one of the first major live music shows broadcast on national television. It was the first show to be broadcast from the Garden, and was a major success for the venue.[85] The concert drew over one million viewers, which then-mayor Kevin White considered a record for Boston's television stations at the time.[85] Though Brown would perform at many more Boston concerts for the next decade, this would be his final show at the Garden.
