It was a 1971 milestone for the Indian Film Industry when Smt. Rekha debuted as an actress in the Hindi cinema. Her early efforts did not fetch her much appreciation. However, by the time she signed films it was clear that she was a star. During her 10 years in the industry, she has acted in a total of 79 films. The first of her films was 'Preeti'(1967) directed by A.R Rahman. Her performance in that film was appreciated and soon she became a favourite of the Hindi Film Industry. There have been five films directed by A.R. Rahman. However, Elaan remains the first film of Bollywood with the presence of Rekha. The film had the distinction of being the first film of the legendary filmmaker, K. Ramanlal. He also directed the first film of actor Vinod Khanna. The film was a box office success.
The film, an adaptation of the 1971 novel of the same name by Raju Bharati, was produced by the Saregama Films. It was released on May 19, 1971 and became a box office hit. Raju Bharati's novel was also produced in 1965 in the Bollywood film 'Rajkahini'. The film has a dual plot. The first half of the film is a love story between a modern young man, Vinod (Vinod Khanna) and the traditional character of a housewife, Elaan (Rekha). The second half of the film has a story of a middle class family's life. The success of the film was inevitable as the title character, Elaan, was the only main character played by Rekha. Her character was a housewife who was forced to become a prostitute for her survival. The film has been described as a bit melodramatic, but it is an interesting tale which is probably the reason for its success.
