Sonic the Hedgehog was developed by Sega for the Nintendo GameCube, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3. It was published by Sega for Nintendo GameCube, PlayStation 2, and Wii in the PAL region and Xbox 360 in the North American region, but not for the Wii.
Sonic Team designed Sonic the Hedgehog to be a game that would appeal to a wide variety of video game audiences, including casual gamers. However, the team did not want it to have as much appeal as a platform game to attract audiences to Sega's consoles, and they toyed with trying to stress the racing or arcade elements of the series.
Iizuka believed that Sonic Team's first priority in designing Sonic the Hedgehog was to create openings for every player. The team wanted to have a game that 2D action games would enjoy, but would have depth for games that were more complex. This led to the team adding new features such as Time Attack levels, challenge modes, and a gauge system. The big thing, though, was that the game would have an open world full of content.
The game has a hub world, designed to be the game's home base. Players can go to any of the five worlds by selecting one from the pause menu. All of the game's eight main zones are accessible in the hub world as well as the four bonus zones, 14 of which had already been seen in promotional footage.
The game retains many of the classic series traditions, but with a modern feel. Some of the game's level designs are simple, while others, such as Shadow the Hedgehog, are more complex. The developers wanted to create an open world level where players could "explore at will, whether they're playing on the go or at home." d2c66b5586
