There are many different methods for developing and testing algorithms. None of them are perfect and all are time consuming, so it is important that we know which ones are the best for developing our own or adapting others. The various software packages that are used for algorithm development vary in many ways. They each aim to minimise the time required to develop an algorithm while allowing easy (and hopefully effective) testing of the algorithm. Some of the most commonly used packages are GNU Radio, Matlab, IgorPro, Maple and rad o3d. The Rad o3d[1] package (v.0.9.3) is a streamlined implementation of the CSMA/CD algorithm that was developed in IgorPro. This package is well suited for single bit, binary vectors with limited numbers of dimensions. In this tutorial students are presented with a brief introduction to the Rad o3d CSMA/CD algorithm, along with some basic visualisation and optimisation techniques. Through a series of exercises, the student develops their own algorithm, optimisation methods, graph visualisation techniques, and learns how to interpret the message files created by the single bit version of the rad o3d CSMA/CD algorithm. An implementation of the Aloha[2] algorithm is also discussed.
