The N8's lengthy battery life - up to 14 hours in heavy usage (and 24 hours when idle) - is good news for users accustomed to such battery-consciousness, and Nokia's bundled software includes a power-saving system that also serves to wake the handset up from sleep mode when it hears a call, SMS or incoming notification.
WhatsApp, though, has the knack of making a smartphone friendly to messaging, and while most other apps don't leave the email client as thin on the ground, WhatsApp steals the screen share show by giving a window on top of the screen, ensuring live tracking, and secure photo uploads and downloads. In use, it can be slow and unstable at times, but the interface is intuitive, and it's easy to hook up any contacts to WhatsApp if they have the app as well, thanks to the contact list being synched with the account on a device.
Another excellent addition is the feature that allows you to share images over Bluetooth. Simply select 'images' from any gallery, and then pull up the details to choose your contact via NFC, route them to either their Android handset via messaging, or a Nokia X (the company's new Android platform) handset via MMS. Just as impressive is Nokia's Direct Share feature, which allows you to share files over both Wi-Fi and 3G, and also gives a preview of the file over the network, so you can organise collection before saving it to the device.
The Lumia 920, with its gigantic screen, is an impressive smartphone and effectively an MeeGo handset, particularly since it's the only Windows Phone handset Nokia currently offers. When it comes to specifications, however, the N8 offers better kit: a full HD screen, quad-core CPU, own memory, WiFi and LTE connectivity, and an onboard accelerometer. It's also a much better device than the Lumia 920 in many other ways, including the camera with dual LED flash and huge 3.7-inch screen. d2c66b5586
