Unmodernized the The Arabian Nights was originally published, along with dozens of other works of Arabic fiction, in a book called The Golden Butterfly (1867–1873). It was edited by William S. Burckhardt, and will hereafter be known as Burckhardt's Arabian Nights. When first translated into modern English, the Burckhardt translated the work into French, rather than English.
Set in Tang Dynasty China, the Wu Hu Jing (Tales of the Five Emperors) features numerous tales from various classical Chinese sources but it includes only one non-Chinese source, the Arabian Nights. This work, known as the Wu Hu Jing zhong de xian yue (Tales of the Five Emperors - in the centre), or Wu Hu Jing zhong de, was published in 1088. It is considered to be the oldest surviving collection of Chinese stories and the earliest complete collection of Chinese stories for a general audience. The other four volumes, also known as the Wu Hu Jing zhong (Tales of the Five Emperors; from the beginning), Wu Hu Jing zhong de xiudou (Tales of the Five Emperors -- in the centre), Wu Hu Jing zhong de xiudou (Tales of the Five Emperors -- in the centre), and Wu Hu Jing zhong de xiudou (Tales of the Five Emperors -- in the centre), were put out over the next 200 years. d2c66b5586
