This is Day 1 of bootcamp. Last night we got to talk about our experiences with the holiday weekend, and ate some delicious Italian food. It was great to sit down, talk about our weekends, and get to know each other for real.
This is how it works - every Monday you and I go through the workout card with the trainer (usually my wife) and make a log of how we did each move. We log our form, the number of reps, sets, and time. It's pretty fun !
Today is Martin Luther King Day, since we had the whole day to ourselves, we started with a spin class and then completed the 21 Day Fix cardio fix video. The best part of today was treating ourselves to a 90 minute massage. What a treat after all our hard workouts!
Something I have noticed over the last couple of months is that I cannot seem to keep the same pace in each workout. In the beginning I had to run from one end of the room to the other to warm up and then I would jog for the first 30 minutes. Now I can do a warm-up and jog for about 30 minutes, and then I can run the first workout at about a 12:00 min/mi pace. I did a little research and found that when your body gets used to a certain speed, it will want to go faster than that speed. So the longer you run at that speed, the faster you will go. I don’t know if this will apply to all people, but I have the impression that my body is not quite as fast as my heart is beating. This might be a function of getting older. I have never thought about it before, but now I wonder.
Finally, I am learning to be a bit flexible and forgiving when it comes to myself. My abs are still there, just out of sight. The first time I went to the gym I had a nightmare that my tummy would turn out to be flat. I was determined to get back to the pre-baby days of running and would not relent until I had bulked up. My body was resilient and it did not take that toll, but I suffered for it. Now I realize I have more muscle than I actually need and I don’t feel like I am 20% smaller than my pre-child self. I have to remind myself that this is not a competition with myself, but rather that I am here to get fit and trim. 827ec27edc
